Gallery History

Julie: Artisans’ Gallery opened in 1973 at 687 Madison Avenue in New York City. It was the first gallery devoted to handmade clothing as an art form.

In 1998 the gallery moved to larger quarters at 762 Madison Avenue, where it remains to this day, still the country’s foremost showcase for “art to wear.” Julie: Artisans’ Gallery has been crucial in establishing this phenomenon as an internationally recognized movement. In 1986, owner Julie Schafler Dale published the book Art to Wear. A glorious testament to the movement, it remains the standard text.

The gallery represents textile artists working in techniques such as silk painting, shibori resist dying, textural knitting, crochet and weaving, along with studio jewelers in the vanguard of formal excellence who work with both the traditional mediums of gold, silver and gemstones as well as avant-garde materials like found objects, plastic, paper and rubber. Each artist represented by the gallery uses his/her own innovations in design and process to create unique pieces that are personally expressive. International in scope, Julie: Artisans’ Gallery represents makers from over fifteen countries, worldwide, in addition to the United States.
